Facts About Colombian Drug Lord - Pablo Escobar

Pablo Escobar (Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria) was (born on 1 Dec 1949, Rionegro - died on 2 Dec 1993, Medellin) a Colombian drug lord and narcoterrorist and the founder and sole leader of the Medellin cartel. He was a powerful drug trafficker in the 1980s  and early '90s. At his career peak, he was one of the richest criminals in history. After 20 years of his death, his story is very much embedded into the psyche of Colombians. 

Here, we discussed some facts and figures about Pablo Escobar "The King of Cocaine".

1. Pablo Escobar,  the son of a farmer and a school teacher, he started doing crimes by his teenager life as selling illegal cigarettes, fake diplomas, and fake lottery tickets, as well as motor vehicle theft and smuggling electronics appliances. The first arrest case was filed against him, in 1974. Shortly thereafter, he became a drug smuggler. In mid 70's he founded the crime organization that becomes into Medellin cartel.

2. Medellin cartel, at the height of its power one dominated cocaine trade, with estimated earning $570 million per week and making it's leader one of the wealthiest people in the world, with a reported worth of $25 billion.


  • He was a millionaire at the age of 22, and he is responsible for 80% of the cocaine smuggled into USA.
  • In the 1980 Colombian government seized some Escobar's property included 142 planes, 20 helicopters, 32 yachts, and 141 homes and offices.
  • In his time, Pablo Escobar offered to pay Colombia's debt of over $10 billion to avoid prosecution.
  • According to Roberto Escobar, his organization spent around $2500 per month on rubber bands to hold the money together.
  • Every year, rats ate about $2 billion of  Pablo Escobar's profits each year because of storing it in a dirty, rundown warehouse as it was the safest option, despite the 10% year loss of earning to the rodents.
  • Pablo Escobar once started a fire with $2 million because his daughter was cold.
  • Once, Forbes ranked him the 7th Richest Man in the world.

3. Pablo Escobar was responsible for killing about 4000 people, including 200 judges, 1000 police officers, journalists & government officials. He also bombed a plane in 1989, which killed 110 civilians. Once he killed one soccer player because of that player goal in his own net.  



4. Escobar bought a property which was the 7000-acre estate known as Hacienda Napoles (recently Naples, Italy). Reportedly costing $63 million. It consists of a soccer field, dinosaur statues, artificial lakes, a bullfighting arena, zoo, and ETC. Now, it's popular for tourist attractions.


5. Escobar has a private zoo with around 200 animals. Many of the animals were smuggled into the country through Escobar's drug planes.

6. Although this kind of stuff, he hoped to win the support of every Colombian as he had sponsored local soccer teams, many hospitals, stadiums, and housing for the poor. For this kind of act, he was known as "Robin Hood". 



7. Around in June 1991, Escobar surrendered and agreed to prison sentence in Columbia. He built a luxurious prison known as La-Catedral, which featured facilities like a night club, sauna, waterfall, and soccer field. 

8. After sometimes officials decided to move him to a less-accommodating prison because of his criminal activities. But Before his transfer, he managed to escape his resort-like prison in July 1992. Sixteen Months after his escape, authority located him and in resulting shoot-out Escobar was killed. Some speculated that he took his own life. 

After his death, Escobar inspired numerous books, movies, and TV projects.
